Aluminum sections are 1/3 the weight of steel (aluminum density = 2,700 kg/m³) but also 1/3 the stiffness. For the same strength, you need larger aluminum sections, which often costs more and takes more space. Steel remains the most economical choice for most structural applications. 12mm diameter TMT rebar weighs 0.888 kg per meter. Formula: Weight (kg/m) = (D²/162.2) where D is diameter in mm. So 12² ÷ 162.2 = 144 ÷ 162.2 = 0.888 kg/m. For other sizes: 8mm = 0.395 kg/m, 10mm = 0.617 kg/m, 16mm = 1.58 kg/m, 20mm = 2.47 kg/m, 25mm = 3.85 kg/m.
IS 808 weight values are based on nominal dimensions with standard manufacturing tolerances. Actual weight can vary ±2-3% due to rolling tolerances, mill variation, and measurement accuracy. For rough estimation (material procurement, cost quotes), IS 808 weights are sufficiently accurate.
